The fight between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for almost two years. Both sides have won and lost, but Ukraine just recently had a very successful strike.
Ukraine said on Monday that they were able to shoot down a $330 million Russian spy plane. They claimed to have destroyed a Russian Beriev A-50 spy plane and an Ilyushin II-22 command post in the air. This was a successful attack by Ukraine while Russia is still fixing up its army.
Army Chief Valeriy Zaluzhnya wrote, “The Ukrainian Air Force destroyed an enemy A-50 long-range radar detection aircraft and an enemy IL-22 air control center.”I’m thankful that the Air Force planned and carried out the operation in the Azov Sea area so well!”
Russia didn’t answer right away, but Ukraine said the plane was worth $330 million and that it was a direct attack on Russia.
The A-50 is a well-known plane that was first used in fights at the end of the Soviet era. This big plane can look over hundreds of kilometers to see if there are any enemy ships, planes, or weapons.
A lot of Russian blogs talked about how big this strike is and how hard it is on Russia because there aren’t that many A-50s in use.
There was a statement from Russia blogger Rybar, who has more than a million readers and backs the Russian war in Ukraine. It said, “It will be another dark day for the Russian Aerospace Forces and Air Defense.” Not many A-50s are around. And there aren’t many experts who work on them. The pilot of this type of plane will not be able to get away if it is hit.
No one knows how many of these planes Russia has, but it is said that they were used during the war in Ukraine. You can see 186 miles away and track a rocket 497 miles away. It can also find targets on land or at sea. Russia depends on it a lot because it can hit more than 300 targets at once. Now that one of these A-50s has been shot down, they don’t have many more to use.
