Border Kindness is a non-profit that helps migrants and runs Day Laborer Outreach programs in San Diego. Jacqueline Arellano is in charge of their U.S. programs. The nonprofit’s organizers will give out gifts in places where migrants often gather while they talk to people and answer their questions.
Right now, the border in San Diego, California, needs all the help it can get because it is the busiest part of the U.S.-Mexico border. A lot of people are very interested in immigration these days, especially since the elections are coming up soon. There are a lot of negative opinions about Biden’s approach to immigration and border control. On the other hand, Donald Trump wants to severely punish immigrants if he wins the election.
They talk to refugees from all over the world, but most of them are from Mexico. For the first few months of their efforts, Arellano said that they would meet in different places, like the parking lots at Home Depot. “In the last couple of years, we’ve seen global migration show up in the community,” Arellano said.
For example, she talked about the plight of many refugees and how many of them are in San Diego but have court dates in other states or cities and don’t know how they will get there. She said that the migrant’s links to help on the ground are very important.
She said about their organization, “This is being held down by groups of regular people, by groups of friends, for the most part.” “That shouldn’t happen.” We shouldn’t just get together with groups of friends to try to save a ship that’s sinking.
Many workers have said that they are doing this because, for more than 30 years, the government has not made any changes to the immigration system that would make it better.
Dara Lind, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, a different non-profit group, said that the immigration court system “hasn’t made Congress feel like it needs to be fixed right away.” Instead, leaders of both parties have used it as an excuse to take strong, direct action because Congress isn’t doing its job.
