With a unanimous vote, the Board of Education has met a new goal: they have banned “sexually explicit” books from schools. Different points of view have been expressed about the Board of Education decision in Maryland. Not long ago, a leader in parental rights said she was thrilled to hear that these books were being banned in schools.
Moms of Liberty is a group that fights for family rights. Among other things, they have worked hard to get sexually explicit books taken out of schools. This decision was praised by President Kit Hart, who leads the Moms of Liberty group. He said it shows that parental rights in schools are not a political problem.
“We really want to highlight that there is a distinction between adults and children that as a society we need to work very hard to maintain and this is a step in the right direction in solidifying that distinction,” Hart stated.
Hart said that “every parent can agree with the idea of parental rights as a whole.”
What the policy says about sexually explicit content: “sexually explicit content is defined as clearly describing, depicting, showing, or writing about sex or sex acts in a detailed or graphic way.” Hart went on to say that parents who didn’t like the books because they were too explicit would have to “work through a difficult process” to find an answer.
The member of the Board of Education named Steve Whisler spoke out, saying that he “just frankly cannot understand how some people can defend this.”
There were parents who did argue against the decision. They thought that some of the books in this group were classics that should be read in school and that students would miss out on reading important books if they were not available.
