In the Washington, D.C., area, crime rates have gone up a lot, and the Justice Department just put out a statement about new tools they’ve gathered to fight crime in D.C.
Officials from the Department of Justice said that one thing they want to stop is the rise in car thefts over the years. It also talked about how a multi-component Gun Violence Analytic cell could help with other government investigations that need more attention.
As for the rise in crime in Washington, D.C., Attorney General Merrick Garland said, “Last year, we saw an encouraging drop in violent crime in many parts of the country, but there is much more work to do – including here in the District of Columbia.”
A lot of people are working on court cases, and the idea of moving new prosecutors to look into both deadly and non-lethal gun crimes was also talked about. Police in Washington, D.C. say that thefts are 17% higher than they were last year and carjackings are 65% higher than they were last year.
Garland went on to say, “This increase in police resources will help the department go after the people and groups that are causing violent crime in the nation’s capital.” We will not stop until every neighborhood in our country is free from the terrible effects of deadly crime.
Other places, like Houston, Texas, and Memphis, Tennessee, have already started making changes like these to help fight violent crimes.
Officials are worried about the rise in violence and want everyone to work together to stop it and set limits for towns, especially in the District of Columbia.
