The President of Harvard Quits After an Anti-Semitism Scandal?

There have been a lot of controversies lately about Claudine Gay, the president of Harvard University, after she answered a question about racism on campus in a very awkward way.

Following claims that big universities did not protect their Jewish students, three college presidents were asked to talk and answer questions. Claudine Gay was one of them.

They asked Claudine Gay if “calling for the genocide of Jews” would be against their code of behavior. The representative was from New York. When asked about this, Gay said it depends on the situation and “speech crosses into conduct, that violates our policies.”

Many people came forward to ask her to quit Harvard after she answered this question. Over 70 politicians asked her to step down, but over 700 faculty members signed a document supporting Gay, no matter what she said.

Once the meeting was over, Gay’s career was in the spotlight as conservatives dug into her past. They found a lot of plagiarized material in her doctoral dissertation, which made her fans even less likely to support her.

After being asked to step down as President of Harvard, Claudine Gay stated that she would be doing so. She said, “It is with a heavy heart but a deep love for Harvard that I write to share that I will be stepping down as president.”

After this interview, she said, “it has been distressing” that people were questioning her dedication to her children and making threats against her. Afterward, she said she was sorry and talked about what she should have said instead when asked about racism.

She said, “At that moment, I should have had the presence of mind to return to my guiding truth, which is that threats of violence against our Jewish community or against our Jewish students have no place at Harvard and will never go unchallenged.”

As more people come out against antisemitism on college campuses, colleges that don’t follow the rules or look out for their students’ best interests are still being looked at closely.
