Russia and the United States have been negotiating the possibility of exchanging prisoners. Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich, two Americans, are the recipients of the exchange; nevertheless, Russian officials report that there has been a small snag and the exchange is delayed.

Although Russia maintains that the suggestions are unjust and contain discriminatory expectations, the US State Department reports that Russia has rejected several of their proposals to free the two Americans.

Sergei Ryabkov, the deputy foreign minister of Russia, stated, “Here, as in many other areas, we observe the American traditional desire to get more for ourselves and give the minimum, as they say.”

Due to several “leaks” and the media’s attention to this prisoner exchange situation, Russia further asserts that the American media significantly influences their decision-making process.

The United States asserts that Whelan and Gershkovich were falsely charged and taken into custody. This has caused the story to be picked up by the media and made public, which makes it challenging for Russia and the US to come to a just resolution in this situation.

Ryabkov claimed that “the American media, in general, are actually engaged in savoring these stories at the instigation of the current administration.” Even in private, behind closed doors, this is an extremely challenging process.

The process is becoming increasingly challenging due to the unjust expectations in the US plan and the volume of media attention this is receiving.

The fact that the American participants in these communications want total anonymity is intriguing. We follow this line as well, but when the White House starts leaking information on a daily basis and starts talking about delicate topics in public, things get weird,” he said.

The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, stated that they were in talks with the US on the conditions of the prisoner exchange and that they hoped to “find a solution.”
