Is There Still Another Gaza Truce? Head of Hamas Travels to Cairo

Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas, recently traveled to Cairo to discuss the ongoing conflict in Gaza and potential improvements. They had talks mediated by Egypt and Qatar on the possibility of a cease-fire and hostage exchange.

There are talks underway to establish another cease-fire, following the violence and ongoing bombs that have forced 85% of the people from their homes and claimed the lives of nearly 20,000 Palestinians.

Following Hamas’ violent actions in Gaza on October 7, Israel has urged others to put the organization on a blacklist and designate it as a terrorist organization.

Having stated all of this, it appears that the parties are having trouble coming to a consensus. Regretfully, Hamas claims that hostages won’t be freed again until the conflict is over. But in return for the captives they still hold, they are anticipated to demand the release of a sizable number of Palestinian detainees, including militants.

Egypt negotiated the last cease-fire, which saw the release of 240 Palestinian hostages as well as 100 Hamas hostages. Nonetheless, Hamas continues to hold about 120 hostages.

Due to a recent outage that disrupted internet and cell service on Wednesday, it has been challenging to stay updated on the Hamas-Gaza conflict. This is further complicated by the fact that leaders’ whereabouts are kept a secret.

Egypt doesn’t appear to have high expectations for a resolution that will put an end to this crisis as the mediated discussion goes on. In addition, they worry that even when the war is over, Hamas will prevent them from going home because to the growing number of hostages.

Israeli forces are reportedly breaking into the tunnel network operated by Hamas in northern Gaza as part of a “final clearing” of militants from the area, according to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.  He claims that they “will not stop until they meet their goals” and that this might continue for “months.”
