Shots were fired at Perry Middle and High School in Iowa around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, the first day of school, just before classes began.
There were five deaths in the shooting, and three kids and the principal were hurt.
The police quickly came to the scene of the killing and called for help. The shooter seemed to have killed himself with a gun. He was found dead at the scene.
Assistant Director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Mitch Mortvedt told reporters, “Officers immediately attempted to locate the source of the threat and quickly found what appeared to be the shooter with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
In addition to the gun and handgun they found on him, they also found what they called a “pretty rudimentary” explosive on school grounds that they were able to defuse.
The shooter has been named as Dylan Butler, who is 17 years old. There is no information about a possible reason for this, but Butler’s mother and two friends said he was a quiet boy who was picked on a lot.
A lot of people have said what they think about the killing. Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican candidate, wrote on X, “We pray for the victims of the terrible high school shooting in Perry, Iowa.” I was there today right after it happened. We canceled our event and turned it into a prayer and open talk.
“No parent, student, or teacher should have to wake up and hear about a school shooting,” Nikki Haley wrote on X. My heart hurts for the people who died in Perry, Iowa, and for the whole town.
Nobody else has said anything else about the shooter. Reasons or ways to stop this from happening again that could be possible.
Iowa law doesn’t say that you need a permit to carry a gun in public, but anyone who buys a gun without a permit has to go through a background check first.
A group called the Gun Violence Archive says this is the fifth act of gun violence in the US this year.
