Every year, U-Haul puts out a report called the Growth Index Report that shows where people are moving to and from. Last year’s U-Haul Growth Index Report showed that California had the most people move from one state to another for the fourth year in a row.

John Taylor, President of U-Haul International, said, “Even though one-way transactions stayed below record-breaking levels in 2023, we continued to see many of the same geographic trends from U-Haul customers moving between states.”

The study also said that Texas has the most people moving in only one direction. Many people who have read the study say it “is no surprise” at all. Reports say that 75,000 people moved out of California in 2023.

Terry Gilliam is from California and started a Facebook group called “Leaving California” that has more than 100,000 users. “Just look at how California is still moving,” he says, “and you’ll understand why middle- and upper-class taxpayers are leaving.”

This is what he said about California’s taxes: “The gas tax, which is already the highest in the country, goes up every July 1st.” Rate hikes of ten percent or more were just approved by most utilities. These rate hikes are already more than double the national average.

Gilliam lived in California for 25 years before moving to Florida two years ago. His Facebook group has grown a lot because it has moving tips and a list of services that can help people who want to leave California.

However, Texas has been at the top of U-Haul’s lists as the state with the biggest rise, and it will stay that way this year too. Lots of people say that Texas has a lot more chances and value for money.

The company U-Haul says that more than two million one-way trips take place every year in the US and Canada.
