Perhaps Election Procedures Will Change?

Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York, is scheduled to vote on an election measure that has the potential to permanently alter how New Yorkers conduct elections. Because they have the potential to affect voter turnout, the modifications outlined are referred to as “monumental.”

The measure may have an impact on presidential elections in addition to shifting town, village, and county elections to even-numbered years. By Friday, the governor will have made a decision on this.

Republican election lawyer Joseph Burns told Fox News Digital, “She has until Friday to sign or veto, and it seems the conventional wisdom now, I think, is that she’s going to sign it.” “That’s a significant alteration to the way New York elections are conducted. To be honest, I’m a little shocked that it hasn’t received the attention from the general public that I believe it merits. However, I believe that in the next weeks, people will be hit very hard by this after she signs it.”

It is stated that the law will only shift county and local elections. The bill might make the campaigns for state and federal offices the primary focus, drowning out any other municipal elections.

“You might spend $1,500 on your entire election campaign if you’re running for town council. Are you really going to be able to get your message out if you’re running against a congressional candidate who may be spending over a million dollars, and that’s before you even consider the super PACs that may contribute another million or two million dollars?” stated Burns.

The main justification offered by Democrats in favor of the plan is that it will boost voter turnout, which is their primary objective.

The primary focus of the supporters is voter turnout in even years, when there is either a presidential or gubernatorial race leading the ticket. The argument put forth by the supporters is that the turnout in even years is significantly higher than in odd years. You can easily verify it as it is a fact and there is no room for doubt. However, Burns noted that there are other counterarguments, Fox News Digital said.

Many feel that there will be more votes cast the more opportunities there are to cast ballots. Others counter that it’s not just about voting but also about campaigns and the media. Modifying the election schedule for municipal politicians may have unintended consequences that result in further changes to the electoral system and outcomes in New York.
