Google Will Pay Massive Settlement For Error on Google Play Store

The largest app shop for Android, Google Play shop, is the brainchild and business behind it. Due to its latest policies around app purchases, Google is coming under fire.

Recently, Google consented to pay $700 million to resolve claims that it had been driving rival apps to its Google App Store. A week after a federal court jury chastised Google for using anti-competitive practices in its Play Store for Android apps, this disclosure was resolved.

About $630 million, or most of the $700 million, would be given to US customers who were duped into utilizing a payment method that raised the cost of digital purchases made through the Play Store. Google benefits from this price hike because, like Apple and other companies, it receives commissions from in-app sales.

People who were impacted by this widespread problem will be informed of their right to file a claim and receive compensation.

This settlement is subject to a few additional requirements. For the next five years, Google, for instance, will need to make it simpler for users to download apps from stores other than its Play Store. Customers will also have more alternatives for how to pay and be able to buy apps with greater flexibility.

Attorney General Brian Schwalb of Washington, D.C., was among those who expressed satisfaction with the settlement and provided an explanation for why it was a success. Schwalb stated that “Google’s anticompetitive practices in the distribution of apps deprived Android users of choices and forced them to pay artificially elevated prices for far too long.”

Even while this resolution is a positive move, it does not address every issue that Google is now having. For instance, Epic Games and Google are still at odds over an August 2020 antitrust lawsuit.

Because of this, a lot of people believe that if Google is unable to settle any of its past cases, like the one involving Epic Games, then the way it operates its app store and processes payments would undergo significant changes.
