Compared to previous generations, younger Americans are migrating more frequently, and you might be surprised by the states they are relocating to.

According to a December Hire A Helper survey, Gen Z—young individuals between the ages of 18 and 26—is the generation that moves about the most, with 17% of them choosing to relocate this year.

The analysis found that Texas was the most populous state in 2023, welcoming almost 345,000 newcomers. Having said that, West Virginia is the most well-liked and top state in terms of new inhabitants, having seen a 138% increase in move-in rates.

Here, South Carolina, Colorado, Kansas, and Utah are the top four states as well. Vermont, Mississippi, Alabama, and Mississippi witnessed the largest Gen Z exodus.

“Suddenly, moving to Colorado or Utah seems more enticing than pricey California places. Furthermore, employment prospects are scarcer in small markets like Vermont than they are in places like West Virginia or South Carolina,” Marquit continued.

According to a Hire A Helper representative, this surge can be linked to the fact that the epidemic is no longer limiting the mobility of this younger group.

“Gen Z is prepared to take independent risks. They appear prepared to start families and homes,” she remarked. “The evolution of work in recent years, focusing on remote and hybrid arrangements, can allow Gen Z to make decisions based on where they want to live and the lifestyle they prefer.”

The findings showed that among the top 10 states with the highest number of Gen Z move-outs were California and New York. For instance, only this past year alone saw 415,000 Gen Z move-outs from California.

Numerous individuals of Generation Z appear to be moving to affluent places such as New York City, Houston, Texas, Tampa, Florida, and Jacksonville, Florida.

It seems that young people are still drawn to New York City, as they have been for many years. New York City is attracting Gen Z because they are eager to explore and experience life,” Marquit stated. “It’s also interesting that they’re drawn to Austin, showing a preference for cities where they can establish themselves and perhaps even surround themselves with found family.”

These statistics show how much Gen Z is moving throughout the nation. Now that the pandemic has largely passed, it is evident that some Americans are eager to relocate to burgeoning communities and start fresh.
