On Monday, the UN agency asked people to help Ukrainian towns that are having trouble because of the war with Russia.
It has been two years since the start of the war, and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs wants $4.2 billion in help for Ukraine in 2024.
As everyone knows, the war in Ukraine has had a big impact on the people who live there, on their towns and their resources. Martin Griffiths, who is in charge of UN relief, said, “Hundreds of thousands of children live in communities on the front lines of the war, scared, traumatized, and without the things they need to survive.” We should do everything we can to send more relief aid to Ukraine just because of that.
The request for money includes $3.1 billion to help 8.5 million people who need help and $1.1 billion to help 2.3 million Ukrainian refugees and the areas where they live.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs got 67% of the aid it asked for last year, which helped at first. However, they have lowered the amount they are asking for while they talk about how to help other people who are also having a hard time, like those in Gaza.
Having said that, they said that millions of people, or almost half of the people in Ukraine, need help.
“We are still in talks with the Russian government about how to get aid to the people who may need it the most right now since it has been two years since any real, effective, regular, reliable humanitarian aid has reached them,” Griffiths said.
According to the request, only half of school-age children are registered and only 40% to 60% of adults have jobs. This means that millions of people are vulnerable and need help. They went on to say that many host countries had continued to help them, but that refugees were still in need of help.
Because of Russia’s attack, which began in February 2022, 6.3 million people have left their homes for safer places.
