There has been a rise in murders with a lot of victims, and we’ve seen them all over the country. According to the Department of Homeland Security, they have been looking into what these violent acts might be about and what crooks might want to do.
However, the Department of Homeland Security said they were having a hard time figuring out why many of these deadly acts were happening. A report sent to law enforcement on January 10 looked at the problems caused by criminals who “espoused and engaged with an array of narratives,” often online, which “likely fuel[ed] their mobilization to violence.”
The police thought they knew what was driving a lot of these violent acts, but a lot of people don’t fit into this category, which is confusing the police.
“Since 2018, we have seen mass casualty attacks in which the perpetrators held multiple grievances, making it challenging for us to identify a primary motive,” the Bulletin said.
A recent investigation by the Department of Homeland Security into attacks that killed 47 people and hurt 130 more came to the conclusion that “recent attackers influenced by mixed factors complicate target identification for law enforcement.”
Understanding the possible reason or purpose for why someone commits a crime is a big part of solving crimes or stopping them from happening again. But with the number of mass casualty attacks going up, there have been a lot of attackers who don’t follow the rules.
A former top DHS official named John Cohen said, “We can’t afford to look at new threats the same way we looked at them 10 years ago.”
Having said that, there have been many links between these kinds of strikes. For instance, the DHS said that “all had personal connections to their targets and exhibited a fascination with violence, as evidenced by their digital footprint and engagement with violent content.” Also, they “held homicidal and suicidal ideations, including ‘suicide by cop’ and suicide following committing a mass casualty attack.”
Also, John Cohen said that these people don’t seem like typical terrorists, so “trying to pin the issue on one single piece of ideology as the motive is not going to allow you to assess this person’s risk correctly.”
A recent study looked into these violent crimes and how they relate to the material that people share online. They said things like suicides, mass shootings, and other things served as “inspiration” for these attacks.
