Due to an increase in migrants crossing the US-Mexico border, authorities had to close two crossings; nevertheless, this appears to be hindering trade. Given that the US Border Patrol arrested almost 10,800 migrants on Monday alone, the number of migrant crossings is increasing.
This number of migrants apprehended in a single day is a record high, according to numerous U.S. representatives.
Acting Commissioner Troy Miller of the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stated in a statement that “the encounter levels we are currently seeing across the southwest border are presenting a serious challenge to the men and women of CBP.”
Numerous people are waiting for the trade route to reopen in order to address this ongoing issue.
According to a statement provided to Reuters by Neil Bradley, chief policy officer of the U.S. Chamber of business, “halting the legal movement of commerce will do nothing to secure the border” and “shutting down rail traffic through Eagle Pass and El Paso will inflict significant economic harm.”
Reopening trade and railroads is being pushed for in order to preserve the two nations’ trading connection. There have been significant delays as a result, and people are unsure if trade between the two nations will continue.
The Association of American Railroads’ president and CEO, Ian Jefferies, remarked in a statement posted on the trade association’s website that “the urgency of reopening these crossings and restoring rail service between the two nations cannot be overstated.”
“A cascade of delays across operations on both sides of the border is unleashed every day the border remains closed, impacting customers and ultimately consumers,” Jefferies stated.
Grain, industrial goods, and cars are a few of the items that are held up for exchange. Approximately 45% of its cross-border exports are handled over the two bridges, and the shutdown will have a daily economic impact of more than $200 million.
In order to accommodate the high volume of migrant movement in the US, other routes have also been restricted. There will likely be significant losses as a result of the closures, and many experts are worried about how trade and the economy will be affected.
