In an official statement released by Bonamici’s communications director, Natalie Crofts on Saturday, she revealed that the incident took place while the congresswoman and her husband were leaving an event in Portland, Oregon.

According to Crofts, the congresswoman and her husband were crossing the street at the time and that they left a Shabbat Service for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr which was hosted by Congressional Beth Israel.

“She was treated for a concussion and laceration to her head. He was treated for minor injuries. She has been released from the hospital to recover at home,” Crofts said in a statement.

She also claimed that “The Congresswoman is expected to make a full recovery, but will be unable to attend the town hall meetings in Clatsop and Tillamook Counties today and other public events while she heals.”

Meanwhile, the Democrat’s husband, U.S. District Judge Michael Simon, was being treated for minor injuries.

Last Saturday, Congresswoman Bonamici was scheduled to attend meetings in Clatsop and Tillamook Counties. However, her staff revealed that she was unable to attend those and other public events while she heals.

Following the tragic accident, Rep. Bonamici posted a tweet regarding the incident.

“Thank you to everyone for your well wishes, and to the first responders and health care workers who provided the care we needed. My husband and I are continuing to recover at home, and are grateful for your kind thoughts and support,” the congresswoman said.

Recently, Portland Police confirmed that two adults were hit on Friday night near Northwest 19th Avenue and Everett. According Sgt. Kevin Allen, the driver turned into them at low speed. However, they were knocked to the ground.

“I heard some sort of a disturbance on the other side of 19th and then I saw a woman lying in the street and a bunch of people clustered around her. And then somebody shouted call 911,” Cushing said.

Cushing also added that, “They kind of knelt around her, and they were waving off the cars and then they waved all the cars forward so that the fire engine could get to where she was lying in the street.”

Following the incident, Oregon Senator Ron Wyden released a statement, claiming that “We just want her to have a very speedy recovery… her husband as well. Congresswoman Bonamici is a fighter and we just know that like everything else in her life — she’s up to the challenge.. and we just want her to get better real quick.”
