When Instagram released Reels, it was meant to compete with TikTok, a social media app owned by Chinese people. It worked, and Instagram now has more users than TikTok. When it first came out in 2010, Instagram was a huge hit as a top app. This was especially true when famous people like the Kardashians and other online stars promoted it.
Their short-form video app, Reels, became very famous when it came out in the U.S., which helped them fight back against TikTok. Sensor Tower, a market intelligence business, said that Instagram was brought back to life by the “popularity of its Reels feature” and other features like stories, videos that disappear, and the ability to share photos.
“One thing that works in Instagram’s favor is that it appeals to a wider audience and doesn’t have the “it’s for kids only” vibe that some people think of when they think of TikTok,” said Sensor Tower.
Sensor Tower says that more than 1.5 billion people use Instagram and more than 1.1 billion people use TikTok. Besides that, they said that TikTok has more busy users because people spend an average of 95 minutes a day on the app, while Instagram users only spend 62 minutes a day on the app.
TikTok is a big competitor for them, according to Mark Zuckerberg. This is because they saw how quickly TikTok got users and popularity. That being said, TikTok has also been criticized because people worry about their safety when they use the social media app. People in the US government are worried about TikTok and how much information they might be getting from users and giving to the Chinese government.
