Americans are frightened as US President Joe Biden declared that the United States would get involved if China invades Taiwan amid the current dispute between the two countries.
During the press conference this week in Tokyo, when the US president was grilled by the media and was asked if the United States would fight if China declares to invade Taiwan, Biden responded and said “Yes.”
As he stood alongside Japan’s prime minister Fumio Kishida, Biden added another statement, saying “that’s a commitment we made.”
Moreover, Biden also added that the agreement signed by the White House to comply with the ‘One China’ policy “has not changed.”
“As the president said, our policy has not changed. He reiterated our One China Policy and our commitment to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. He also reiterated our commitment under the Taiwan Relations Act to provide Taiwan with the military means to defend itself.” The White House Spokesperson said.
According to the policy, “China only owns the People’s Republic of China, so the US’ diplomatic dealings with Taiwan are not official.” However, China still claims that Taiwan is part of the Republic.
Furthermore, amid the dispute between Taiwan and China and the potential Chinese invasion, Biden added that “his expectation is it will not happen, it will not be attempted.”
Biden’s controversial remarks came after the reports of China, conducting military tests in the disputed South China Sea. The US president also condemned China’s military exercises and accused the country of “flirting with danger.”
Following Biden’s remarks, Chinese officials responded and argued that Biden’s comments invoked “strong dissatisfaction and resolute opposition.”
“China has no room for compromise or concessions on issues involving China’s core interests such as sovereignty and territorial integrity.” Beijing’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said.
“They [Biden touring Asia] are connected because, before Biden touched down in South Korea – the first stop on the trip – the Chinese publicly warned him not to talk about Taiwan, and so there was the joint statement between President Biden and President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea, which specifically mentions Taiwan,” he added.
