Snap, the social media company, said on Monday that they would be letting go of a lot of workers. There have been a lot of layoffs in the tech business lately.
The people who make Snapchat, Snap, have said that they will be letting go of about 500 workers, or 10% of their staff. It is said by the company that the layoffs are meant to “promote in-person collaboration.” Snap has given us cuts before. In August 2022, they let go of 20% of their staff, which was their first big cut.
A Snap spokesperson said, “We are reorganizing our team to reduce hierarchy and encourage people to work together in person.” We are focused on helping the people who are leaving our team. Along the same lines, many tech companies have shed jobs; in January 2024 alone, more than 20,000 jobs were cut across the tech industry.
Other tech companies, like Meta, have tried to do the same things that Snap has. Meta and Snap, two social media companies, were among those present at a hearing where the CEOs of those businesses were asked about worries about child safety on their sites.
Even though there has been a lot of debate, investors are in favor of companies cutting jobs. A lot of people are being let go at Meta as well, because the company is focused on a “year of efficiency.” Along with other tech companies, Alphabet and Amazon also let people go. Zoom very recently said that they would be laying off about 150 people from their businesses as well.
Because of the news, Snap’s shares have not done well. They fell 3% when the market opened on Monday.
Because of the need to cut costs and downsize in order to be more effective with fewer resources, layoffs have been a common choice in the business. Some people have also thought it might be to make way for AI to get better.
