Trump, who was president before, told Hillary Clinton that if he won, he would pull the US out of NATO.
She talked about this while she was in Germany at the Munich Security Conference. People at the meeting were told to pay attention to what Trump says because he means what he says.
Clinton said, “We have a long fight ahead of us, and the most important thing to remember about Trump is to take him seriously.”
“What he says is true. There were times in 2016 when people did not take him seriously. People who try to wish it away or brush it off are living in a different world now that he has told us what he plans to do.
No matter what the election results are, Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO, said that the US would “remain a strong ally and committed ally.” But Clinton says Trump means what he says because he might do what he said he would do if he wins the election.
Clinton told the conference, “He will do everything he can to become an absolute authoritarian leader if given the chance to do so. And he will pull us out of NATO even though the Congress passed a resolution saying that he couldn’t without congressional support, because he won’t pay our bills.”
Trump has been critical of NATO since he took office in 2016, which is why Clinton said what she did. Many other political leaders thought it was controversial for him to say that countries that don’t pay their fair share of the NATO budget shouldn’t be protected.
Trump said some things about NATO countries that Stoltenberg didn’t agree with, but she said that her position would not change no matter who won the election in November. Still, many countries did check their gifts after hearing what he had to say to make sure they were in line with what they were supposed to give.
