There has been recent talk about a possible TikTok ban after the owner was told they could sell the app or take it down from U.S. app shops. Donald Trump, who used to be president, has talked about the possible ban and what it would mean.
Trump said that Meta would be stronger and more successful if TikTok was banned, stating, “Without TikTok, you can make Facebook bigger, and I consider Facebook to be an enemy of the people.”
Concerns about TikTok’s effect on national security led Trump to say, “There’s a lot of good and there’s a lot of bad” about the site. He said, “A lot of people on TikTok love it, and a lot of young kids on TikTok will go crazy without it.”
Short-form movies are what TikTok is all about. The Chinese company ByteDance owns the social media site. People in the US and other countries who use the app are very worried about the fact that it is owned by China. These calls for a ban are based on worries about threats to national security that could come from TikTok.
Trump also tried to get TikTok taken down from US app shops in 2020 when he was president. However, this didn’t work, and until now, there had been no plans to get rid of TikTok again. The worry comes from the way China runs its companies and businesses. Businesses and groups in China need to “support, assist, and cooperate with the state intelligence work.”
So, politicians in the US are taking action to change the social media app and the possible dangers it poses to its users. Joe Biden has blamed the app for threats to national security and said he would sign a bill to ban it if it passes Congress.
