Recent events have led to Donald Trump deciding not to take part in the second GOP debate.

According to The New York Times, Trump’s choice has further complicated an already unpredictable primary season.

The Detroit-based debate was eagerly awaited by many as a chance to watch Trump square off against his Republican rivals. Trump has already voiced his displeasure with debate moderators and formats.

The former President’s decision to skip the discussion should be interpreted as another tactical decision. Trump avoids potential arguments and difficult inquiries from the moderators and fellow contenders by choosing not to participate in the discussion.

In addition, his absence guarantees that he will continue to be the subject of conversation.

Two Trump advisors who have knowledge of the arrangements stated that Trump intends to visit Detroit the day of the upcoming Republican primary debate in order to intervene in the labor conflict between the nation’s top automakers and the striking autoworkers.

Trump will forgo the trip’s prime-time statement in front of current and former union members for the second straight primary debate in favor of his own counterprogramming. At the first G.O.P. presidential debate in August, he participated in an online interview with former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson.

The fact that Trump chose to visit Michigan only a few days after the United Auto Workers began a strike demonstrates his desire to appear to be looking past his primary opponents as well as the fact that both he and his political machine are already considering the possibility of facing Vice President Biden again.

Thus, on September 27 in California at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, Trump will address over 500 workers instead of the next GOP debate, according to a Trump adviser familiar with the scheduling. His campaign plans to fill the room with plumbers, pipe-fitters, electricians, and autoworkers.

Trump has blasted the union leadership without directly addressing the pay demands of the striking employees, but he has attempted to more broadly position himself on their side.

Michigan is a major battleground state, making the forthcoming debate in Detroit important. The state went in favor of President Joe Biden in 2020 after barely going for Trump in the 2016 election. GOP candidates will have an opportunity to engage Michigan voters at the debate and establish the basis for the forthcoming race.

Trump’s absence will give other GOP candidates more time to outline their positions and proposals. This could be a perfect opportunity to increase support and win over voters who are still undecided at this point. Trump’s epic personality ensures that his absence will surely be felt and that he will most likely continue to dominate conversation during the event.
