A plan to give Rupert Murdoch and Elon Musk an award named after the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was canceled because of negative reactions.
Julie Opperman, chair of the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation, said, “While we believe each of the honorees is worthy of our respect for their leadership and their important contributions, the foundation has decided that the planned ceremony in April 2024 will not happen.”
She added a statement saying that they didn’t mean to hurt anyone and were just trying to show her respect. However, the event was canceled so as not to hurt RBG’s friends and family.
Ruth Bader Ginsberg was the second woman to be named to the Supreme Court. She held the job for more than 25 years. She died in September 2020, when she was 87 years old. Now, her family is trying to find ways to honor her memory and represent her.
RBG, who died too soon, made the award that was being given. She explained that the award would honor “women who have worked to improve the world for future generations, women who show empathy and humility, and women who care about the dignity and well-being of all people who live on planet Earth.”
A lot of people also didn’t like that the award was given to two men when it was meant to be for women only. Family members said they got calls about how upset people were about the decision. The awards were canceled the next day after they were revealed because of the huge amount of negative feedback they got so quickly.
