A lawyer raised worries about how the closing of schools during the pandemic affected students of color.

Because of “learning loss” and the effects that switching to virtual learning had on some students, especially students of color and low-income students, a lawyer in California has sued the state of California.

A lawyer from Morrison Foerster named Michael A. Jacobs spoke out, saying, “Our challenge to the state was, basically, look, the pandemic happened.” You gave school districts a lot of money and told them to go teach. We thought that wasn’t enough, argued that it wasn’t enough, and proved that it wasn’t enough.

He went on to explain their position further by saying, “The schools closed.” The start of remote learning. In a way, the districts just assume that everyone has a quiet place to learn from home on a computer with a fast internet link that doesn’t break down all the time. That’s not true for kids of color or those with low incomes.

Schools in California were closed down for the most part, and students were sent to a virtual learning program to take lessons and learn online instead. For most of the beginning of COVID-19, this was the case.

Under the terms of the settlement, California will pay $2 billion to help kids make up for lost learning. This is known as the biggest settlement in U.S. history that has to do with education.

The court case showed that California did not “ensure access to digital connectivity and devices” or provide “necessary academic and social-emotional support,” which meant that families had to deal with a long time of remote instruction with little help.

Plus, a lot of parents said their kids didn’t learn anything and sometimes had trouble with the internet, which made things harder. The main goal of this settlement is to make sure that kids who need help get it.
