The Best Survival Knives Money Can Buy

Best survival knives

As a long time survival expert, an outdoorsman and a prepper, I take my tools seriously, and you should, too. What if a collapse happened today? How long will our gear last? Is it going to survive past the first month? I hope so.

One item that I recommend investing both time and money in is your primary survival knife. Basically, this is something that goes where you go. There are so many survival applications for knives; I could write an entire book just naming them.

Just like every other serious prepper or survivalist out there, I’ve picked my favorites and I’m sure you will as well. I want to share them with you, but first things first; there are 3 types of survival knives: fixed blade knives, folding blade knives and multi-purpose tools. They have their obvious advantages and disadvantages. For instance, a folding blade survival knife is the least bulky, but a multipurpose tool can be more effective in different situations.

Considerations

When I look for a fixed blade knife, I want something that is solid and strong that will perform and last in the wilderness. I also will not buy a fixed blade knife that does not have full tang construction. (For the uninitiated: “full tang” means that the metal of the blade extends fully into the handle of the knife.)

With a folding knife, my main consideration is how well it stays open or folded. I will not buy one that looks like it is going to get loose after several uses. I play with folding knives for awhile prior to buying them to see if I can open them with one hand. It can be very frustrating holding buttons and latches down if you are injured and only have one hand available.

When it comes to choosing a multi-purpose tool, I recommend starting in the higher price range right off the bat. There are lots of cheap tools out there. Most of them look the same and most of them will fall apart.

With any knife, I look for a quality handle and a blade that will stay sharp.

A few recommendations

  1. Kershaw OSO Sweet Knife. This is a high quality knife with Stainless-Steel Blade and Nylon Handle with SpeedSafe. The blade is 3.1 inches long.
  2. Steel River Custom Knife. Hands down one of the most beautiful tactical knives that I have seen come to the market in years – streamlined but powerful, lightweight but built to be used daily and a strong member of your EDC pack.
  3. Paraframe EDC & Steel River Custom Tactical Knife. This is a minimalist EDC Knife called the paraframe and the tactical and safety knife, the “Custom”.
  4. Coin Knife. These incredible coin shaped knives are well worth checking out.
  5. Hidden Knife Belt. Lightweight, extra strong, and reliable – this is YOUR new concealed multi-functional survival Knife Belt!
  6. SOG Tomcat 3. This folding knife is perfect for survival applications. The blade is made of VG10 steel and the grip-qualities of the handle are supreme.

I recommend buying all 3 types of knives and stashing them in your bug out bags, EDC bags, emergency car kits, etc. You probably won’t settle for buying one of each, either.

Have you picked your favorites yet? I‘d love to hear from you!

To your survival,
Richard Marshall
