An intruder was shot by a homeowner of Dale County after they were caught trying to break into the resident’s home early Wednesday. The intruder was left in critical condition after the incident.

According to a statement from Dale County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mason Bynum, Ozark-Dale County E911 received a 911 call at around 5:44 am about a burglary in progress from a resident in the 5000 block of County Road 14 in the Sylvan Grove community.

The statement read, “While the caller was updating dispatchers the suspect broke an exterior window of the residence and began to make entry. As the suspect entered the window the homeowner discharged a firearm striking the suspect in the head.”

At 5:50 am, a deputy arrived at the residence and found the suspect lying unresponsive near the resident’s house.

The intruder is listed in critical condition after being brought to a local hospital.

Though the case is still in its early stages, the sheriff’s office has consulted with the Dale County District Attorney’s Office. According to the statement by Bynum, they do not anticipate any charges at this time.

Similarly, a homeowner in Houston, Texas last month also shot an intruder, fatally injuring him.

According to the Houston Police Department (HPD), the homeowner woke up early in the morning after hearing the back door glass break, which is when the intruder entered the house. The homeowner was reportedly alone at the time.

The intruder went upstairs and opened the door to the bedroom, only to be greeted by the homeowner holding a gun. The homeowner shot the intruder in the neck, police said.

“A homeowner was asleep up on the second floor of his residence when he heard the backdoor glass break,” said HPD Lt. Ignacio Izaguirre. “The intruder went upstairs and also managed to open the door to his bedroom. At that point, the homeowner, seeing the intruder, discharged his firearm striking the intruder in the neck area.”

After being hit, the intruder ran away and started knocking on neighbors’ doors for help but soon died at the scene.

HPD said it is unclear if the intruder was also armed when he entered the residence and it appears that the intruder does not have any prior relationship or acquaintance with the homeowner.

“At this time we don’t believe there will be any charges on the homeowner,” Izaguirre said.
