Due to the increasing shoplifting crisis in cities like San Francisco, Target, one of America’s leading retailers, has recently strengthened its efforts to control shoplifting by installing locked merchandise cases in stores nationwide.

It has been reported that Target’s retailer in Folsom Street has been locking up merchandise since October 2022. Locked cases were also used to secure items in the personal care section in another Target store in Riverdale, New York.

Shoplifting has been a problem for retailers for quite some time. Still, recent leniency in prosecuting small-scale theft has emboldened criminals, resulting in a surge in shoplifting incidents.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) noted that organized retail crime is a “persistent and endemic problem in the United States that appears to be growing.”

Total inventory losses from shrinkage, theft, and other causes grew by almost 4% in 2021, totaling $94.5 billion.

While others contend that shoplifting only has a negative impact on businesses or insurers, the truth is that all consumers and law-abiding citizens also deal with the fallout.

Target uses a “multi-layered approach to combating theft,” according to their representative. Aside from installing locked cases, the approach also involves in-store technology, training for store managers and security personnel, and partnerships with law enforcement organizations and retail trade associations.

It becomes more challenging for Americans who are barely making ends meet as a result of higher prices, as businesses inevitably pass these expenses on to the customers. This contributes to the factors of how important it is to hold shoplifters accountable and maintain a safe and thriving community for all.

Moreover, Walmart and Walgreens have also struggled with growing theft concerns.

The unwillingness to prosecute small-scale thefts simply gives an implication  to the thieves that there are no repercussions for their crimes. Because of this tolerance, the safety of both store staff and consumers is jeopardized.

Locked merchandise cases might be a temporary solution, but it’s critical to deal with the underlying causes of this problem.

Retailers like Target can advocate for the safety of all law-abiding citizens by engaging with legislators, law enforcement, and retail sector partners to support public policy that promotes safety and discourages theft.
