A child sexual abuse tipline online that has been in business for more than twenty years has been asked to fix and change some parts of its program. A study from Stanford Internet Observatory said that the website has not lived up to its goals and that it needs to be fixed so that law enforcement can do their jobs more quickly.

Numerous people have said that they need the changes to happen quickly because AI technology could make their issues even worse. A report author, Shelby Grossman, said, “In the years to come, the CyberTipline will almost certainly be flooded with highly realistic-looking AI content.” This will make it even harder for police to find real children who need to be rescued.

Congress set up this service years ago as the main way to protect kids who are being abused online. When this kind of content is found on a tech company’s website, they are legally required to report it. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s method lets them do their job.

Law enforcement already has a lot to worry about because of the large number of CyberTipline reports that come in every day. This is just one problem that they will have to deal with. Law enforcement also has to deal with reports from tech companies that are missing important information. This makes it hard for them to decide which reports to look at first.

A professor at Stanford named Alex Stamos said, “Right now there are big problems with the whole system, and those cracks will become chasms in a world where AI is making new CSAM.”

They want to fix a number of problems with the program in order to make it work better and give law enforcement the most benefits possible.
