Republicans in the House and Senate aired their concerns over the investigation involving US President Joe Biden’s first son, Hunter Biden.
Just recently, the GOP lawmakers moved to increase the intensity of the ongoing Hunter Biden investigation.
According to the reports, there was a letter that is set to be sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Monday.
The letter was reportedly penned by Sen. John Cornyn, Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Chuck Grassley, and Minority Leader Mitch McConnel, Republican Senators.
In the letter, the authors revealed how Republican Senators are currently wary of the political interference that “may be present” in the investigation into the President’s son.
“As you know, The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware – led by U.S. Attorney Weiss – has been investigating Hunter Biden. There is no way of knowing the entire scope of the investigation, but evidence seems to be mounting that Hunter Biden committed numerous federal crimes, including, but not limited to, tax fraud, money laundering, and foreign-lobbying violations,” the letter read.
The Republican Senators also called for the Department of Justice to use its powers, seeking to protect both the U.S. Attorney Weiss and the integrity of the investigation.
“Under Department of Justice regulations and federal law, you have the power to provide special counsel authorities and protections to U.S. attorney Weiss. Given that the investigation involves the President’s son, we believe it is important to provide U.S. Attorney Weiss with special counsel authorities and protections to allow him to investigate an appropriate scope of potentially criminal conduct, avoid the appearance of impropriety, and provide additional assurances to the American people that the Hunter Biden investigation is free from political influence,” the letter added.
In 2018, former President Donald Trump appointed U.S. Attorney Weiss has remained in his office ever since.
Although it is President Biden’s son who is being investigated, he still chose not to remove Weiss from the role.
“Given the politicization of the DOJ under your watch and the importance of avoiding any appliance of impropriety. the undersigned request that you provide U.S. Attorney Weiss the full protections and authorities of a special counsel. This is one important action that you can take that will go a long way to restoring faith in our governmental institutions,” the letter said.
On Sunday, Joe Biden spoke about his son’s public image.
“I love my son, number one. He fought an addiction problem. He overcame it. He wrote about it. And, no, there’s not a single thing I’ve observed at all that would affect me or the United States relative to my son Hunter,” President Biden declared.
