Republican Montana Sen. Steve Daines is calling for outlawing flag burning following anarchist groups torching the American flag.
According to The Daily Caller, Daines reintroduced a constitutional amendment on Wednesday that would prohibit the burning of the American flag. He first introduced the legislation in 2018.
“When we woke up today, we woke up in the greatest country on earth,” Daines told the news outlet before introducing the legislation.
“The American flag represents a beacon of hope and freedom. This freedom was built on the sacrifices of the brave men and women who carried its colors into battle to defend the United States of America. We must always protect the sanctity of the American flag,” he added.
This comes after fellow Republicans Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York introduced legislation in both chambers that would require American flags displayed on federal property to be fully made in the U.S.
“The American flag is a symbol of freedom and hope for Texans, Americans and the world,” Cruz told The Daily Caller. “We should be making our flags in the Land of the Free, and I’m proud to work with Rep. Stefanik to ensure every flag flying over a federal building was manufactured by Americans and made with American materials.”
“My Make American Flags in America Act is crucial to ensuring that American flags are 100% Made in America. We must patriotically support our small businesses across the country, many in Upstate New York and the North Country, that proudly make and sell American flags,” Stefanik said.
Former President Donald Trump has also shown approval in passing a law that would prohibit the desecration of the American flag.
“We have a different court and I think that it’s time that we review that again. Because when I see flags being burned – they wanted to crawl up flag poles in Washington and try and burn flags but we stopped them. They’re weren’t able to do it. They would’ve done it if we didn’t stop them. I think it’s time to relook at that issue, hopefully the Supreme Court will accept that,” he said in 2020
