Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, recently said that his country is ready to use nuclear weapons if its freedom is threatened.
Several people have said that Putin’s message is aimed at the West, and he sounds sure that he will have another six years in power after this election. Since the war in Ukraine started, Putin has talked about using nuclear weapons more than once. He’s also said that he wouldn’t use nuclear weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine because he “doesn’t think the world is heading for nuclear war.”
Stéphane Dujarric, a spokeswoman for the UN, said, “…all rhetoric that could lead to miscalculation or escalation with clearly catastrophic consequences for the world must be avoided.” When Putin said he would do anything to protect what he got from Ukraine, he was probably talking to the West.
He also briefly talked about NATO, saying, “The countries that say they don’t have any red lines when it comes to Russia should know that Russia won’t have any red lines when it comes to them either.”
Putin replied that if the U.S. did send troops into Ukraine, they would be seen as “invaders and act accordingly.” President Joe Biden talked about the U.S. and how they wouldn’t be sending troops there.
It was also said by Vladimir Putin that Ukraine and the West would have to give in and make a deal for the war to stop. Putin said, “It shouldn’t be a break for the enemy to re-arm; it should be a serious talk about the Russian Federation’s security guarantees.”
In the past few weeks, Ukraine has attacked Russia successfully. In one recent attack, more than fifty drones were shot down, killing two people.
