White House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that she’s stepping down as House Democratic leader and will no longer run for leadership post, marking an end of her two-decade streak as the top House Democrat.

On Thursday, Pelosi announced that she will step down from party leadership to make way for “a new generation” after two decades of serving as the first woman to hold the top role in the US lower house.

She also announced that she will not seek reelection to her congressional leadership role but made it clear that she will remain in Congress and serve out the term to which she was just elected.

In a 14-minute speech, Pelosi said that “with great confidence in our caucus, I will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress. For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic Congress that I so deeply respect,” Pelosi said. “And I am grateful that so many are ready and willing to shoulder this awesome responsibility.”

Early this year, the house speaker had vowed that she would not seek reelection. She also claimed that she would step down as the leader of House Democrats after the election in 2022.

“There was a move to put limits on the leadership and the chairs of committees. They said they were going to do it, but they didn’t do it. But what I said then was whether it passes or not, I will abide by those limits. I can’t wait to be working with Joe Biden. I don’t want to undermine any leverage I may have, but I made the statement.” Pelosi said.

Previously, rumors have also revealed that Nancy Pelosi is stepping down from her job post.

“Nancy Pelosi is so well respected and so well appreciated that no one is looking forward to seeing her leave, and the last thing anybody wants is to be viewed as making even the littlest insult to the speaker… from a purely practical, political point of view, no one wants to offend Nancy Pelosi,” Todd David, a former political director for Wiener, said in a statement.

The rumors surfaced after the House speaker revealed that she was traumatized by the violent hammer attack on her husband, Paul Pelosi.

Last October, 82-year old Paul Pelosi was beaten violently with a hammer by a male intruder at the married couple’s San Francisco home amid a confrontation involving Nancy Pelosi.

According to the reports, Paul suffered a fractured skull and injuries to his right arm and hands, and remains in hospital.

Reports revealed that suspect, David DePape, 42, demanded to see Nancy Pelosi when he entered the house.
