North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, told his army on Friday to “step up their war preparations.” Kim Jong Un was taking a tour of a shipyard in Nampho where his troops tested weapons.
Kim Jong Un said, “The navy presents itself as the most important issue in reliably defending the maritime sovereignty of the country and stepping up war preparations.”
As he gets ready for any threat, Kim Jong Un has been pushing for more military engagement and testing, even nuclear testing. Kim has made it clear that Japan, the US, and South Korea are all possible dangers.
The shipyard Kim Jong Un was visiting was full of warships that were still being built. It wasn’t said what kind of warship it would be, but the project began in 2021 and is supposed to last 5 years.
Kim has talked a lot about the weapons he wants, including nuclear weapons like submarines driven by nuclear power that can fire nuclear missiles from the water.
A spokesperson for the South Korean Unification Ministry said, “North Korea is trying to make the South Korean people feel unsafe by making military threats on a regular basis. This is done to hurt trust in their government and to get the attention of the rest of the world so that its demands can be met in order to end the crisis on the Korean Peninsula.” That’s also the first time Kim Jong Un had ever done a security check there, she said.
North Korea has been regularly testing its weapons for a while now. Right after this was reported, they did another test, which was confirmed by both South Korea and the US. South Korea fired a cruise missile into the water near North Korea. This is the fourth test of a cruise missile in 2024.
