Early this morning, there was an earthquake in New York City. People who live in places where earthquakes don’t happen often feel a rumble.
The quake was first thought to have a magnitude of 4.8. In addition to Boston and Philadelphia, people in Connecticut and Massachusetts said they felt the earthquake. Aftereffects could be felt in New Hampshire, where people felt the shocks.
Many people in the area felt more than a dozen aftershocks in the hours after the earthquake. The fire service said that no one had been hurt or killed in the earthquake. But people in New York were shocked by the earthquake because they don’t usually have them there.
Camille Lewis spoke out about the earthquake. She said, “I haven’t been in an earthquake in New York, and to be honest, I was scared that something was going to happen.” I’m thankful that the building I was in held up, and I’m glad that everyone is safe.
“I asked myself, ‘Do I need to get under a table?'” Everyone looked around and didn’t know what was going on. It went on for a while. “Definitely weird,” she said.
People were safe after the earthquake, but they were shaky from it. In a hurry, many people tried to call their kids, friends, and family.
Mayor Eric Adams told everyone to go about their normal day, but he also said that this was the biggest earthquake to hit the East Coast in more than 100 years.
Some planes had to land, and other flights were delayed, which made it hard to get around the area. Even in New York City, trains moved more slowly.
A lot of people were just going about their normal days when the earthquake happened. Some people felt the ground move, others saw their clothes moving in their closets, and others saw their glasses shaking.
While East Coast tremors don’t happen very often, when they do, they are often felt in many places because the bedrock there isn’t as solid as it is in other places.
