National Self-Interest Causes Global Concerns

A study from the Munich Security Conference says that many countries are now focused on “zero-sum thinking,” which means they are looking for ways to get ahead through “protectionism, self-interest, and rejection of mutually beneficial cooperation.”

This year, the MSC is putting together a meeting for world leaders to talk about things like the conflicts in the Middle East and what might happen if Donald Trump wins the election. The main point of the study is to show that a lot of people are moving away from transactional thinking.

People at a rally on Saturday heard Trump say that he had warned NATO allies that he would tell Russia to “attack any member of a state that failed to meet a defense spending target of 2% GDP.” Trump’s statement was talked about by Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of NATO. He said that Trump “undermined their security” and that the comment was “appalling and unhinged.”

Josep Borrell, who is in charge of foreign policy for the EU, said, “NATO cannot be a military alliance that can be put together based on the president’s mood.”

According to polls, a lot of people are worried about the country’s economic future. Voters in Europe are also worried about the danger of Islamic terrorism and the migration that is happening because of climate change and war.

The report’s authors said that both Russia and China “skillfully peddled the narrative that the western countries are promoting the division of the world into blocs and, by regularly interpreting the ‘rules of the rules-based international order to their own advantage, are guilty of practicing double-standards.”

It looks like a lot of people said that the world is “run by western ideas” and that this could lead to problems as 2024 goes on, especially as the election comes and the fighting in the Middle East gets worse.
