John Kerry Says Ukraine’s Greenhouse Gas Effect Scares Him

John Kerry, the special climate envoy for President Joe Biden, has been at the forefront of climate policy discussions, despite his own use of private planes and associated carbon footprint.

Recently, he turned his attention to the ongoing war in Ukraine, linking it to the worsening impact of climate change.

During an appearance on MSNBC News on July 10, Kerry emphasized the urgency of the climate crisis, citing the record-breaking heat of the current summer. He urged global cooperation, emphasizing that everyone needs to come together to address the issue.

Kerry pointed out that the war in Ukraine is exacerbating climate change due to the bombs and attacks damaging critical infrastructure like electrical centers and septic tanks. This damage leads to the release of methane and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, further contributing to the problem.

“When you have bombs going off and you have damage to septic tanks or to power centers, etc., you have an enormous release of greenhouse gas.” Kerry lamented.

It’s worth noting that Kerry did not imply that the US should refrain from helping Ukraine or being involved in the conflict. Instead, he underscored the importance of recognizing the war’s environmental impact.

This is not the first time Kerry has raised the issue of war’s impact on climate change. In a June interview with The New York Times, he referred to climate change as a “threat multiplier” and stressed how armed conflicts can affect health and food security.

He specifically accused the Russian military of showing little regard for civilian lives and using weapons with dire consequences for the environment.

Kerry’s comments on the destruction of septic tanks during the war drew criticism and ridicule online.

Some Twitter users used clown emojis to mock him, questioning his credibility. Christina Pushaw, an employee of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, humorously inquired whether Kerry had swum to the UK or flown on a private plane.

Did “Special Climate Envoy” John Kerry swim to England… or did he take a private jet? https://t.co/jREYf6noP1— Christina Pushaw 🐊 🇺🇸 (@ChristinaPushaw) July 10, 2023

“Did “Special Climate Envoy” John Kerry swim to England… or did he take a private jet?” Pushaw tweeted.

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley joined in the criticism, expressing her eagerness for the current administration to come to an end. The situation has highlighted the ongoing tension and polarization surrounding climate change discussions and the actions of public figures advocating for climate policy.
