Iran has issued a warrant to arrest former US President Donald Trump, the Baghdad Today news agency reported.
According to the report, the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan has issued an arrest warrant against Donald Trump for the assassination of the Quds Force commander and other forces of the country.
On Thursday, Zaidan announced the issuance of an arrest warrant against Trump for the killing of the Quds Force commander, Qasem Soleimani, and chief of staff of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Iraq, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis in 2020.
“Why has he not yet been held accountable for this heinous crime?” Zaidan asked, referring to the former US President.
The controversy arose after the U.S. army under the administration of Donald Trump carried out a military operation which killed Soleimani near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.
The operation took place as Suleimani was planning to attack American citizens across the region which led to an airstrike in Baghdad, the Pentagon revealed in its official statement at that time. It was also fueled by the growing confrontation with Tehran which began after the death of an American contractor in Iraq late December.
The operation killed commander, Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani, who reportedly led the powerful Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, along with several officials from Iraqi militias backed by Tehran after the American MQ-9 Reaper drone fired missiles into a convoy that was reportedly about to leave the airport.
The death of the officials sparked escalation of tension between the United States and Iran.
Following the controversial military operation, Iran released an official statement where it vowed strong revenge.
In the emergency meeting convened by the country, supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a statement calling for three days of public mourning and then retaliation.
“His departure to God does not end his path or his mission but a forceful revenge awaits the criminals who have his blood and the blood of the other martyrs last night on their hands,” the statement said.
A few days following the statement, Iran responded by firing missiles at Ain Al-Assad base, the largest U.S. base in Iraq and the U.S. forces deployed in Iraq were also subjected to a series of attacks by pro-Iranian Iraqi groups last year.
