Alton Mills, a 54-year-old man whose sentence was commuted by former President Barack Obama, is now facing three charges of attempted murder in connection with a shooting incident in Illinois.

The incident occurred on Sunday when Mills, allegedly firing from his car, targeted another vehicle on an Interstate 57 ramp in the village of Posen near Chicago, according to a report by Breitbart News.

Officials have confirmed that during the shooting, a passenger in the victim’s car was struck by gunfire, sustaining life-threatening injuries.

According to the reports, the incident started when three friends left a nightclub in south suburban Harvey. As they approached the ramp to I-57, the driver of their Ford Explorer pulled up behind Mills’ SUV at a red light.

According to Assistant State’s Attorney Kathryn Morrissey, Mills’ car did not move when the light turned green. The Explorer’s driver proceeded to pass without honking or shouting, prompting Mills to speed up and catch up to the Explorer. He then fired shots from his driver’s window, one of which struck a sleeping woman in the back seat of the Explorer, critically injuring her.

Mills, who had received a life sentence for cocaine trafficking in 1994, saw his sentence commuted by Obama due to it being his third felony conviction, despite his previous convictions not resulting in prison time. After being granted clemency, Mills went on to work for the Chicago Transit Authority and actively campaigned for the elimination of mandatory minimum sentencing, as reported by CW Chicago.

In the aftermath of his clemency, Mills was invited to speak at a U.S. Senate criminal justice forum by Senator Dick Durbin. Durbin referred to Mills as “an overlooked casualty in our ‘war on drugs,'” emphasizing the need for criminal justice reform.

However, the recent attempted murder case involving Mills has raised concerns about the potential repercussions of granting clemency to individuals with criminal backgrounds.

pThe latest developments in the case have put Democrats under scrutiny, as they face criticism for being perceived as soft on crime. With the upcoming 2024 election cycle, voters will have the opportunity to determine whether they want to continue entrusting the left with leadership that is perceived to have weak criminal policies or opt for new leaders who prioritize cracking down on crime.
