Stuart Delery was the White House lawyer for more than three years, counseling President Joe Biden on legal issues as he faced the deployment of the pandemic response, Republican investigations, and key legislative projects.

Delery, the first openly queer individual to hold this post in the White House, will leave his position at the end of the month.

Delery joined President Joe Biden’s transitional legal staff after the Democrat defeated Trump in the 2020 presidential election and took his seat.

Dana Remus, Biden’s first legal representative, left the White House last summer, and he was elevated from deputy counsel to counsel. Delery made history when he became the first queer White House lawyer.

Vice President Biden referred to Delery as a respected counselor and a constant source of new legal ideas.

Republicans in Congress have expressed a desire to look into impeaching the president. The investigation into whether the President stored any classified materials at his home or former office in Delaware or Washington is being conducted by a special counsel that Biden’s attorney general appointed.

About a dozen legal, legislative, and communications staffers oversee and conduct investigations at the White House.

Cabinet members and other senior officials must decide whether to leave or continue in their positions by the end of the summer, according to President Biden’s chief of staff, Jeff Zients.

Senior White House attorney Delery was Vice President Biden’s go-to person when he created the order to cancel $400 billion in student loans last year.

After the Supreme Court determined that the government had overstepped its authority with the plan in a 6-3 judgment with conservative judges in the majority, borrowers will be liable for making payments again starting in the autumn.

Last month, Biden outlined a more reasonable plan to assist with student loans. The new strategy is based on federal legislation that governs the student loan program. The redesigned plan has also been subject to a legal challenge.

Delery also assisted in the government’s implementation of new border security measures to deter unauthorized entry and encourage asylum applicants to use a new online application process.
