US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris labeled pro-life officials and Republicans “extremists.”
During a meeting at the White House on Tuesday the U.S leaders addressed a task force that Biden made in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s “fairly extreme” decision.
The president also called for the Congress to “codify the protections of Roe.”
“Congressional Republicans are doubling down on extreme positions with the proposal for a national ban. Let me be clear about what that means. That means that even if you live in a state where extremist Republicans officials aren’t running the show. Your right to choose will still be at risk. Because Republicans in Congress want to pass a law that removes the right to choose for every woman, state and county.” Biden said.
In addition, Harris also said that the Dobbs decision has created a “health care crisis in America” and criticized “extremist so-called leaders [for] attacking the freedom and liberty of millions of women at a state level.”
“What we’re seeing in laws around our country is the criminalization of doctors and health care providers. If there was a national law that was passed in the United States Congress to protect reproductive care, so-called leaders then could not ban abortion, even in the cases of rape and incest,” the vide president added.
Moreover, the Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona also released a statement saying that his department “sent new guidance to universities reminding them of their obligation under Title IX, which prohibits sex-based discrimination in schools that receive federal funds.”
“If you or someone you know encounters discrimination today, I want to be clear with college leaders in America. Access to contraception should not be in question and access to health care – including reproductive health care – is critical to the well-being and success of our nation’s students. If you’re committed to student success, you must be committed to student health,” he said.
However, the two leaders failed to consider the fact that several Republicans have announced that the issue of abortion should be decided on a state-by-state basis and alleged that extremist laws are already popping up across some Republican states.
“You know, it’s a really scary part that they’re already succeeding in some states. When the job decision came down, I said, and Justice Thomas warned us very plainly, that this wouldn’t stop with a women’s right to choose. It would extend the right to privacy itself in things like contraception and so, with no surprise, that we’re seeing extremist laws pop up around the country that are having a ripple effect far beyond the health rights of a pregnant woman.” Biden added.
The president also refused to mention Senator Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) proposal to ban abortions after 15 weeks of a woman being pregnant and lied about the Republican officials’ support for abortion exceptions especially if the cases involve incest rape, or for when the life of the mother is at risk.
