A heartwarming development has occurred in the case of Monica de Leon Barba, a U.S. citizen who was abducted while walking her dog in Mexico.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has reported that after eight long months of captivity, Monica has been released by her abductors and happily reunited with her family.
“For the first time in a very long time we have good news! I need to thank every single person that helped my family and I through this entire ordeal. We can all finally close this chapter in our lives and work on the long road of healing we have ahead,” de Leon’s brother, Gustavo de Leon, said.
The emotional reunion took place recently, and Monica’s family couldn’t contain their joy. They shared heartwarming photos of the moment they were finally able to embrace their beloved daughter and sister once again. In the images, Monica can be seen flashing a peace sign, a symbol of hope after enduring such a traumatic ordeal.
Gael De Leon, Monica’s cousin, who was also kidnapped in a separate incident, has also been released and reunited with her family in Mexico, adding to the joyous occasion. The release of both women took place on Friday in Mexico, according to the FBI.
The investigation into the abductions is still ongoing, and no arrests have been made at this time. The circumstances surrounding Monica’s release have not been disclosed, but her family and friends are grateful for her safe return.
“For the past eight months, FBI personnel in California and Mexico have worked tirelessly with the family and with partners in Mexico. Our relief and joy at the safe return of Monica is profound,” Special Agent Robert Tripp of the FBI San Francisco Field Office revealed.
“The FBI investigation is far from over, but we can now work this case knowing an innocent victim is reunited with her family,” Tripp added.
The FBI had suspected that Monica’s kidnapping was a targeted incident. The hostage-takers had contacted her family, creating an agonizing situation for them.
In response to the desperate situation, a $40,000 reward was offered for information leading to Monica’s safe recovery. Surveillance footage of her walking with her dog at the time of the abduction was also released, showing at least five suspects involved in the kidnapping.
Thankfully, Monica’s dog, who had been with her at the time of the abduction, was later found wandering the streets and was reunited with her family.
“Monica was confronted by several suspects and forced into a gray Volkswagen Jetta. The suspects then drive away in three different vehicles, including the Jetta,” the FBI stated at the time of the kidnapping.
The release of Monica and her cousin Gael brings an end to the harrowing ordeal they faced. The family now looks forward to the process of healing and moving on from this traumatic chapter in their lives.
