An employee in Chile could not be found after his job accidentally paid him more than 330 times his salary due to payroll error, reports revealed.
According to the company, the worker submitted his resignation after the incident and when the company staff tried to contact him, he’s nowhere to be found.
The company claimed that the worker was supposed to get paid about 500,000 Chilean pesos, or $545. However, he received a paycheck of 165,398,851 Chilean pesos, or $180,418, for the month of May.
Reports revealed that the worker was a dispatch assistant to cold meats manufacturer Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos, one of the largest producers of cold cuts in Chile.
In a report released by local media outlet Diario Financiero, the company revealed that the employee initially alerted his manager of the massive overpayment.
The manager then reported the incident to the resource manager who later demanded the worker to go to his bank and return the extra money. He then agreed to go to the bank and cash in the money the next day.
However, the worker refused to give the money back and ignored communications from his employer over the next few days.
The employee then sent his resignation through a letter sent to the company by his attorney. The worker has not been heard since.
Meanwhile, in response to the employee’s action, the company, Consorcio Industrial de Alimentos, has reportedly filed a complaint against the worker. The company alleged that the employee was misappropriating funds.
At the time of writing, no arrests have been made so far.
This isn’t the first time that something like this has happened. In May, a 24-year-old man reportedly gambled away an accidental payment of 46.3M of Japanese yen ($357,400).
Reports revealed that the money was accidentally deposited to the man’s bank account on April 8.
According to the reports, the man gambled the money away on online casino sites.
“I don’t currently have the money and I don’t have anything with property value at hand. It’s actually difficult to return it.” The man said as quoted by his lawyer.
