The size of an asteroid about the size of a building is expected to pass by Earth…far enough away to be safe. It is thought that the asteroid will be between 690 and 1,757 feet across and will be about 1.7 million miles away from Earth.
It is thought that the asteroid will be about the same size as the Empire State Building in New York City. This asteroid was found in 2008 and given the name 2008 OS7. It is said that it will not pass Earth again until 2032, and when it does, it will be much farther away.
The asteroid is too far away from Earth for it to hit, according to NASA. However, it is still an interesting event, and more asteroids will pass by Earth much sooner than you might think.
NASA also says that 107 asteroids have already passed Earth this year, seven of them in the last month. These asteroids have been closer to Earth than the moon.
NASA says that this isn’t the only asteroid that will be close to Earth this week. In fact, on Friday, three more asteroids that are smaller than this one will likely pass by Earth. It is thought that these asteroids will be only a few tens of yards across. Another asteroid, about half the size of 2008 OS7, will pass by Earth on Sunday. It will be about 4.5 million miles away.
