Four senators, led by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, want Congress to spend at least $30 billion over the next three years to create AI and make sure it is safe. A report from the group said that the US needs to “harness the opportunities and address the risks” of AI.
They said that they might not always agree on the details, but that they all think that it’s important to find a balance, especially since it’s becoming more popular and is used in other countries. They addressed their worries in a report that was more than thirty pages long and pushed for a thirty-billion-dollar budget.
Shumer said, “It’s hard and complicated, but we can’t hide our heads in the sand.”
They told Congress to come up with “emergency funding” to increase U.S. investments in AI. This would include more testing, research, and development. In terms of openness and the effects of AI, they also suggested new rules.
Sen. Mike Rounds (R) said, “This is a time when the dollars we put into this investment will pay off for the taxpayers of this country in the long run.”
As the one who set the plan and then brought in three other senators, Schumer was in charge of the group. When they started talking with tech executives and experts, they were told that the government needed to step in right away to control the growth of AI technologies.
Indiana Republican Senator Todd Young said, “At the same time that people were amazed at what that one generative AI platform could do, they started to think about the risks that might come with future developments of AI.”
Like other technologies, artificial intelligence comes with risks. However, its wide range of skills can be a big worry for people, businesses, and the government.
