Gun shows and online gun sales in the U.S. now need background checks

Background checks will be needed for both internet and in-person gun sales because of a new law introduced in the United States. As the Justice Department puts it, this is a “historic” new step that will keep crooks from getting guns.

The “Gun show loophole” let private sales go without the rules that only approved dealers had to follow. This hole was made when the Biden administration tried to tighten gun laws more. Since then, there has been a move to close the hole.

“This rule says that it doesn’t matter if guns are sold online, at a gun show, or in a real-life store; if your main goal is to make money, you need to be licensed and do background checks,” Merrick Garland, the attorney general, said.

He went on to say, “This rule is a historic step in the fight against gun violence by the Justice Department.” It’s going to save lives.

The White House has said that more than 20% of guns owned by Americans were bought without a background check. More than twenty thousand people will have to get a license to sell drugs once this is done.

The head of the ATF said, “There is a big and growing black market for guns that is run by people who deal guns without a license. Because of this, they are not doing background checks like the law requires.”

According to the Safer Communities Act, people “who devote time, attention, and labor to dealing in firearms as a regular course of trade or business to predominantly earn a profit would be considered a dealer.” This is the law that says who can sell guns.

The White House did make it clear, though, that transfers of guns or one-time sales to add to a collection would not be seen as sales from a broker.
