A gift of $1 billion to a medical school in New York City broke all kinds of records and now many students can go to school for free.

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx has been given $1 billion. This kind gift came from Dr. Ruth Gottesman, a past professor who is now the chair of the school’s board of trustees. By far, this is the biggest gift that has ever been given to a high school in the United States.

This gift to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine means that students will never have to pay fees again, says Dr. Phillir Ozuah, president and CEO of Montefiore Einstein. So, all fourth-year students will get their money back for what they already paid for that year. After that, no one will have to pay tuition at that school anymore.

This is compared to the cost of tuition and fees for one year of medical school, which is about $63,000. Also, many students graduate from this college with over $200,000 in debt.

“This donation completely changes our ability to keep attracting students who care about our mission, not just those who can afford it,” said Dr. Yaron Tomer, dean of the college. It will also free up and support our kids, letting them work on projects and ideas that would be impossible otherwise.

“Every spring, when we send out a new group of diverse doctors to work in the Bronx and around the world to help people and make their communities better, we will remember the legacy that this historic gift leaves behind,” Tomer said.

Ruth Gottesman and her husband David “Sandy” Gottesman are giving this large and kind gift. “I am very grateful to my late husband Sandy for leaving these funds in my care,” Ruth Gottesman said. “I feel blessed to be able to give these funds to such a good cause.”
