New York City has experienced the most substantial surge in shoplifting among major cities in recent years, reflecting a broader trend of increased theft and overall crime across American cities since 2020.

A study conducted by the Council on Criminal Justice reveals a staggering 64% rise in shoplifting incidents in New York since mid-2019.

However, there is a glimmer of improvement as the first half of 2023 saw an 8% decline in the rate of shoplifting, providing a cautious note amid the concerning statistics.

The New York Police Department has been grappling with an alarming increase, tracking nearly 100,000 cases of petit larceny in 2023, a marked escalation from previous years.

John Miller said. “You’re seeing this kind of shoplifting and organized retail theft happen in places like New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia” because “these are places where bail reform laws, criminal justice reforms, have taken the inside of a jail cell out of the equation.”

Los Angeles follows closely, experiencing a 61% spike in retail theft. The city has become a hotspot for high-profile robberies, including an incident where a luxury vehicle was forcibly stopped on a busy freeway, resulting in a daylight robbery.

Additionally, ‘flash mob’ robberies, involving large crowds raiding retail establishments, have become a troubling trend in Los Angeles. Notably, a group targeted a Nordstrom location, making off with thousands of dollars in merchandise, estimated to be as much as $100,000.

Similar incidents have occurred, with robberies at a Nike store and a flash mob ransacking a Yves Saint Laurent store, resulting in an estimated loss of about $300,000 in merchandise. Los Angeles has witnessed more than a doubling of retail thefts in the first half of 2023, surpassing other major cities.

The study highlights a significant uptick in theft not only in New York and Los Angeles but also in cities like Virginia Beach, Dallas, Raleigh, Boston, and Pittsburgh since 2019.

Critics attribute much of the crime increase to a 2019 bail reform law, prompting New York’s legislature to make multiple amendments in recent years in an effort to address the concerning trend.

The complex interplay of legislative changes and criminal activity underscores the ongoing challenges faced by metropolitan areas in curbing theft and enhancing public safety.
