NY Times Trashes Musk After Losing X Check Mark

Since acquiring Twitter last year, billionaire Elon Musk has undertaken significant changes, including renaming the social media platform as “X.”

Musk has been vocal about his commitment to promoting free speech and leveling the playing field to give alternative news sources equal exposure alongside established media outlets.

As part of these changes, Twitter has taken actions against certain legacy news organizations, such as removing their verification checkmarks, which were previously displayed alongside the names of prominent individuals and companies.

Recent articles in The New York Times and The Washington Post have raised concerns about the implications of Musk’s ownership of the platform.

The New York Times, in particular, pointed to a perceived contrast between Musk’s earlier statement that the platform should not become a “free-for-all hellscape” and the conclusion by the reporters that, under his leadership, it had become just that.

When Elon Musk bought Twitter a year ago, he said he wanted to create what he called a “common digital town square.”….“That said,” he wrote, “Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape.”….A year later, according to study after study, Mr. Musk’s platform has become exactly that.

New York Times

The New York Times itself had experienced a temporary loss of its verification status earlier this year, initially due to its refusal to pay the new monthly subscription fee imposed by Musk.

However, Musk later reinstated verification for the news outlet and some other accounts to facilitate user confirmation of their authenticity.

Following an incident related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, during which the New York Times promoted a disputed claim that Israel was responsible for an explosion at a Gaza hospital, the outlet temporarily lost its verification status once again. The Times later retracted its report, acknowledging its reliance on statements from Hamas leaders.

Rather than addressing the issues within its own newsroom, the New York Times chose to criticize “X” and Musk for what they perceived as problems on the platform.

The article from the Times asserted that the platform had witnessed a surge in racist, antisemitic, and hateful speech, while exposing users to misinformation about climate change and divisive propaganda.

Now rebranded as X, the site has experienced a surge in racist, antisemitic and other hateful speech. Under Mr. Musk’s watch, millions of people have been exposed to misinformation about climate change. Foreign governments and operatives — from Russia to China to Hamas — have spread divisive propaganda with little or no interference.

The Times

Elon Musk has remained resolute in the face of criticism, challenging those who claim that he has contributed to an increase in hate speech and misinformation on the platform, asking for specific examples to support their allegations.
