Biden’s Press Conference With Brazil President Turns Into Cringe Fest

During a joint press conference, President Joe Biden and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva introduced a “workers’ rights” initiative aimed at reshaping their economies in response to perceived climate change challenges.

The event had its share of awkward moments between the two leaders, including an instance where Lula seemed to expect a handshake from Biden, who instead turned away and exited the stage.

Biden also encountered difficulties while attempting to adjust the earpiece meant to translate Lula’s statements from Portuguese to English as he spoke.

Biden made the case for his administration as the “most pro-union administration in American history” and emphasized the positive impacts on employment and wages that could result from transitioning away from fossil fuels, gas-powered vehicles, and other everyday necessities in the fight against climate change.

Coincidentally, this announcement came less than a week after the United Auto Workers (UAW) union initiated a strike to demand fairer wages and worker contracts.

Nearly 13,000 American automobile industry workers are currently on strike, pushing for substantial wage increases of up to 40% and changes that would ensure new workers receive equal pay compared to more experienced colleagues.

These demands for wage protection are linked to the broader transition to “green” industrial practices. The $1.9 trillion “Inflation Reduction Act” has favored “green” energy projects with substantial subsidies and incentives, contributing significantly to ongoing inflation issues in the United States.

UAW representatives have expressed reluctance to engage in fair negotiations due to government subsidies and substantial bailout payments to major automakers.

In response to the strike, over 2,000 employees at General Motors and Stellantis, two of the most affected companies, were notified of impending layoffs.

Biden’s assertion that transitioning entire major industries to address climate change would lead to a robust economy for workers was echoed by Lula, who used his remarks to criticize “neoliberal policies” for their perceived adverse effects on the global labor movement.

Lula suggested that the United States should consider Brazil’s ecological transition and energy matrix transformation as a model to follow. He emphasized that the United States and Brazil were now in a new phase of their relationship, characterized by mutual sovereignty and beneficial trade and investment ties.
