Former President Donald Trump is urging Republican lawmakers to oppose moves toward automatic voter registration in Pennsylvania ahead of next year’s presidential election.
In a Truth Social post on Monday, Trump wrote that the move would hurt GOP candidates in the state, including him. He won Pennsylvania in 2016 but lost it in 2020 to now-President Joe Biden.
“Pennsylvania is at it again! The Radical Left Governor, Josh Shapiro, has just announced a switch to Automatic Voter Registration, a disaster for the Election of Republicans, including your favorite President, ME!” the former president’s post read.
“This is a totally Unconstitutional Act, and must be met harshly by Republican Leadership in Washington and Pennsylvania. Likewise, the RNC, and Ronna McDaniel, must spend their time working on this, instead of meaningless Debates where I am up by more than 50 points,” the post continued.
The second 2024 Republican presidential primary debate will take place on Wednesday. Like the previous one, Trump is not expected to participate.
Democratic State Gov. Josh Shapiro said last week that his state would be rolling out automatic voter registration ahead of the 2024 election cycle. Pennsylvanians who are eligible to vote will now be opted in automatically when renewing or obtaining new ID cards and driver’s licenses. Previously, eligible voters had to personally opt in to the registration process.
Trump has been constantly warning about another attempt by the Democrats to rig the 2024 presidential election. In August, the 45th president said that the Biden administration’s initiative to implement a new mandatory COVID-19 vaccine is a ploy to help the president win his campaign.
“The left-wing lunatics are trying very hard to bring back COVID lockdowns and mandates with all of their sudden fear-mongering about the new [COVID-19] variants that are coming. Gee wiz, you know what else is coming? An election,” Trump said in a campaign video at the time.
“They want to restart the COVID hysteria so they can justify more lockdowns, more censorship, more illegal drop boxes, more mail-in ballots, and trillions of dollars in payoffs to their political allies heading into the 2024 election- does that sound familiar?” he continued.
